From time to time I love me some indie games. When I was in the phase of wanting to be a Computer Programmer, all I did was get inspiration from indie games. If some of you don’t know, there is variety ways in getting a game engine. One of the first game engines I ever mess around with was yoyogame’s Game Maker. A good 2d-Engine. They also have a website with all the games that is made for their company. One of which will be in my review.
The game I’m reviewing is a game that was made by user Sakisa. It’s called Crime Life 2. This game is considered to be a “YoYo Legend”. I was wondering why, but when you open to play it, you quickly notice the reasons they made it…..a legend.
In a nutshell, Crime Life 2 can be compared to GTA 3. Don’t expect the action and thrill from the Grand Theft Auto series, but it is just like it. You can steal cars, fire weapons and even go into buildings. I’ve played this a number of times because it’s addicting. The software that this game was made on, is strictly 2d but with some coding no how you can make the game “Appear” to be in 3D. So that alone is impressive (Maybe I was biased because I like Programming).
Let’s kick things off with the Graphics. Don’t expect this game to look like Gears of War, or Gods of War, because you will be disappointed. This game graphics is like Playstation One. There’s only daytime in the game, and on some cars you can see reflections. There is also a map in the game, but it doesn’t all of the areas of the city. The city is pretty big to do some damage (Not GTA big, but it there is lots of room to maneuver). Building is unique. Each building you goes into there’s a different layout. The cars were made to look good. But far from that, there’s really no deepness on the graphics side of things.
Now Game play is where this game has some strong points. There are lots of situations in the game that plays out like any old GTA game. There’s stealing of the cars, boats and Helicopter; there’s cheats codes in the game. If you need a quick fix, this game has it. There are plenty of cars in the game. The one cool feature I noticed off the bat was that each car has a speedometer (By the way, that’s what few GTA’ers has been wanting in their game). I have to say though, that each car seems to gradually lose speed. Not a lot, but if you drive in one car for so long, you can slightly notice your speed going slower and slower. A nice thing is that the “Bigger” the car the slower it goes by. That seems to exempt the Humor, but the other big trucks do go dramatically slower.
If you feel the need to, let’s say, blow off some steam, this game has the answer for your problems. You can shoot, steal cars and beat people up in the game. You have around 10 weapons to choose from. They go from a simple hand gun to a flame thrower. Maybe not a wide variety of choices, but if you know how to use them, it’s thrilling. And of course those pesky police officers are there to try to get you. In my test, you can out last them sometimes, while other’s you can’t. Never the same. The A.I in this game isn’t that smart. The driver A.I sometimes runs straight into the buildings. That happens once in awhile, but not so much to shake your head. The controls are easy to get into. The basic WASD setting, with the mouse (Although, I do hope in the future developers start using the ARROWS for moving; but that’s just me I suppose).
Don’t expect to have a story in the game. As matter of fact, the very first scene is a bus dropping you off at your “Safe House”. After that, you make up your own story/scenario that you have in your own mind.
This game is really impressive and addictive. The user who created this, also created a lot of good games on YoYoGame site too. The link to the game is here Crime Life 2
Overall I will give this game an 8.5/10. This game is addictive and fun.
