Gaming has come a LOOONNNNGGGG way hasn’t it? From DOS to consoles. Each year we expect something better than last. As I look at all my games, I can’t seem to shake something loose. Old time games, to me, is a lot harder then new school games. I mean, each game has there difficulty, but it seems that the games that I played on N64, were exceedingly harder than the new games. Is it because I’m getting older and older and I develop a “nac” for gaming? Maybe, but how much of that is skill and how much of that is on easy gameplay?
As matter of fact, a couple of months ago I dusted my old N64 system (I still have it in my room). As I look through my games I see my favorite game….Banjo Kazooie. Wow, that had to be the best game in my eyes for some odd reason. And yet, I still haven’t beaten that game. Nope, not since it came out in 1998. That’s freakin’ CRAZY right?! This game was far too “advance” for my level of gameplay back then. I was far into Baseball games. Puzzle type of games I wasn’t interested in. I think the first rugrats game I actually beaten it. I tried to play it again awhile ago, and I can’t get pass that final puzzle before the ending! I can go through games like skittles, but this freaking game gives me problems. Was games this hard back then? Or did I just suck at it? I don’t think I suck, it was more of the little interest I had with the game from the start (Even though it was my favorite. How ironic?). But it just proves that games back then were challenging.
The very first game that wasn’t dealing with sports I’ve completed, was Grand Theft Auto Vice City. And I did that with a friend! I didn’t get into FPS until ’04 or ’05. That’s when I stop buying so much sports games. It’s kinda funny, because now I buy a sports title every other year. Remember Mortal Kombat? I stunk at that. I don’t even know why I brought the game in the first place. I envied the people who knew the codes by heart without needing to pause the game to see the codes. In all honesty, I don’t think I ever won a game in that. I think that’s the reason why I never buy boxing. I only brought wrestling games for the entertainment value. It’s just crazy to see how my skills in games has gotten proficiently better year by year.
It just seems that some new games are a hit or miss. The new version of Grand Theft Auto IV was terribly easy. While Black Ops was a little more challenging than Modern Warfare 2. Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving the new games, but it’s a hit or miss. I’m more into the story of a game then the graphics…Which is the main focus of games these day. Meh, me I’m a story and gameplay guy, graphics comes secondary to me. Sure, it’s nice to look at, but if the gameplay and story sucks, then there’s not much to the game.
To conclude this rant, I have to ask if you agree that games have gotten “easier”. Do you think it’s because of skill? It’s a variety of reasons why games isn’t as challenging awhile ago. Why is that perhaps? I don’t know. Maybe I’m just too picky. Really, it’s in the eye of the beholder. Maybe I need to get with the times(HA!). Yet, I still need to beat Banjo Kazooie to get a clear answer….
