When is too much, too much? That’s the question that just came to my mind. With so many games that’s coming out to console’s and PC’s, I can’t stop to notice that the majority of the release are FPS(First Person Shooter’s). And now that I think about it, in the past couple of years of gaming there has been nothing but FPS games. Now, if you are a hard core gamer, you know where to look for different type of games(Especially, if you use the computer). But some fans aren’t hard core. They get there info from TV ad’s and what TV Ads are mostly producing, are FPS games. Like the Call of Duty franchise. They will market that game to death, and now with Killzone 3, I am seeing FPS games after FPS games on TV.
It’s a mystery to me in how I got so deeply into FPS. When I was a kid, I loved only sports games and puzzle games. I played baseball, so I would get EVERY TYPE of baseball game that was on the market. I also loved Banjo Kazooie. Which, I sadly have to admit, I still haven’t beaten the game. Pathetic, I know. I played hockey games, but rarely basketball games. I played some fighting games like Mortal Kombat. Now, with FPS, there’s very little in that genre that I played. The first one that I can remember, is Perfect Dark. But, I never completed that game. One of the reason I didn’t complete it, was because I didn’t know how to start the missions(Forgive me, I was so YOUNG!). The only thing I remember doing there was going against my friends in the versus mode. I had a medal of honor game on the PS2, but never finished it. As matter of fact, I can’t even find that game! I was so careless of games back then. I didn’t like FPS games that much. That, and it wasn’t really promoted enough back then. Right up until 2002-03, is when I got my first real taste for FPS. It’s a game that we all love, Halo 1. My dad played it, on the ship when he was in the navy, and told me about it. I didn’t buy it until he came back home. And oddly enough, I didn’t beat that game(Go figure, right?). I got up to the first couple of missions, and gave up(As matter of fact, I still haven’t completed that game). To make a long story short, my first FPS game that I actually sat through and completed, has to be the very first Gears of War game. And that was in 2007 a couple of months after it was released. So, yeah, I was a little late.
I may have strayed from the main point I’m trying to make, but bare with me. There were not that many FPS games promoted back before 2004. I was use to sports games, so I really didn’t care for FPS. But with the release of Killzone 3, and the upcoming release of SOCOM 4, it had me thinking. The market is saturated with these types of games. And what draw me to them, is the stories. It if it has a weak story, I would not be interested in them. Which, is why I am confused on why I like Modern Warfare 1 and 2. In any case, there’s a lot of FPS games out in launch. That leaves the other games in a different genre, to have people just “Stumble” upon. I’m sure there are other wonderful games out there, but it’s kinda hard for them to produce hits with this type of market. But, I believe if your game is good enough, the people that buy it will past the word around. Only hard core gamers feel the need to browse the web for the gaming hit. But, it is supply and demand. Until the crowd chants they want variety, expect next year to have a FPS game out every month.
To conclude this talk, I can’t get enough of these games. I like any type of game that has a good story, or is something to solve. If it’s good, I will buy it; Plain and Simple.
What do you think? Is there too much FPS game marketing or do you think it’s even out? Explain what you think in the comment section.
