Do you ever remember those old English movies, where they had those feather pen that the revolutionary wrote with? How many birds died to be someone’s writing utility? Ever dream about having one? Yes? No? I got to tell you, I ALWAYS wanted one. The movie could be telling me a masterpiece, but I was always amazed at the guy having that feather pen and dipping it in a bottle and writing with it. That blew my mind! When I was younger, I thought it went away like the VHS tapes…to the technology graveyard. So, I never ask for one(That, and I didn’t want a bird to die to please me >_>). But, can you imagine that they do exist? Even better, I have one! Well, not the feathery kind, but a pen shape one with a nib. Hey, they had to advance somehow, right?
I’m writing with one right now(I write in my notebook, then type it out on the computer). To say the least, it is a cool writing instrument. Before I even knew the name of this pen, there was this kid in my high school chemistry class that had a fountain pen(Mind you, I didn’t know it was called that). One day I seen him with it and told him that was a cool pen. I remember that he was drawing a picture with it. I was fifteen at the time and thought it was the coolest thing since slice bread. As with every other teenager, I immediately ran to my mom asking for this pen. She immediately took a look at me and said no way. *Sighs*
Well, I didn’t ask again and soon forgot about it. After that day, I don’t even remember seeing him with it again. Now, Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. I was getting board in the word processor. I had a urge to write again, for some reason. Haha, yeah, who chooses to hand write now a days? I just wanted to get away from the computer screen a little more. So, as I was writing, something in the back of my mind remember the time when that I seen my friend using a pen. I did a little digging, and found out that it was called fountain pen. I did something that I should of done years ago…I googled it. And quite surprisingly, I found a plethora of results! You be quite surprise at what you find on Google.
I seen so many sites, and so many pages dealing with fountain pens. There’s even a repair shop for them! I even look at this site, Fountain Pen Network , that discuss everything dealing with fountain pens. There fanatics, not in a bad way, about their pens. If you really want to know about fountain pens, I suggest going there. There’s more sites to discuss and learn, but I go to that on the most.
The first thing I went to do, was to go on Amazon and find me one of these pens. Just to warn you, the pens can get quite expensive. I was surprised to see some go up to $500.00! Men, I was almost turned off! But, I digged deeper and seen some really nice one’s that was “cheap.” The one that I have was listed at twenty dollars. The thing with fountain pens, is that there are different size “nibs” (The part where you write with). I have what they call a medium nib. Writes pretty good. Saw the review of this pen and brought it. And I got to tell you, I love it!
With my small knowledge of fountain pens, let me describe to you a little process that goes with using a fountain pen. Modern fountain pens let you have cartridges and ink converters. If you have been using roller balls with gel ink, you should know about cartridges. You just pull the cartridge out, and replace it. Well, fountain pens has a extra thing to it, which is why I love those feather pens to begin with…ink bottle!! Yes, you can buy a ink bottle to use with your pen, but you have to buy a ink convertor for them. What even amazed me by that, is that you can buy any color of ink imaginable! Red, green, blue, purple; several mix colors. You can even mix colors with the bottles you have! It’s really amazing. I’ve even order a blue ink bottle. I have a itch to get my hand on a green ink bottle one of these days…
I didn’t think this blog would run more than two paragraphs, maybe I have enough to ramble on? But, I do have some more to talk about. I don’t want to turn this into a pen review, I just want to give you my take on this pen so far.
You have to get use to writing with this type of pen. I seen so many videos of fountain pens, so I got the gist on how to write with it properly. You have to write in a 45 degree like angle. Way different than a roller ball or a ballpoint pen. You don’t have to put too much pressure on it like the other pens. If you write a lot, especially if you are a college student, I would suggest buying a fountain pen. I have FUN writing with this pen! You will have a fun time changing ink(Trust me on this). Which brings me to another point. You will change ink…a lot. I’ve changed at least three times in three weeks. Some report they change two in a week. This semester I didn’t have to write as much. So, I didn’t have to change a lot. I mainly wrote the most at home. But. if it was like the last two semesters, I would have been changing more frequently. By the way, the ink is water based, not gel based. And I see that it dries quicker than the gel based kinds. The one thing you got to keep in mind with fountain pens, is the maintenance. You don’t have to do that will ballpoint pens or gel pens because you can just throw it away(Well, they do have disposable fountain pens). You have to make sure to clean the nib. I flush my nib with water with every other change of cartridge.
This blog went a long way to what I initially wanted to do. Didn’t think this was going to happen. Just one more thing to add to this. Once I started to use the fountain pen, I can never get back in using roller ball or ballpoint pens! It’s odd!! It feels like I’m learning writing all over again! I guess a side-effect?
Well, to end it. I’m liking this pen. Which is a Parker IM fountain pen. It looks real good! They say, once you buy one, you’ll eventually buy another…And I’m searching for one right now…
